New Covenant

"This was not abandoned"

[Verse 1 - arriving, the scene unfolding slowly] The smoke was the first thing Then the smell of something lost I recognized the doorway Before I counted the cost The walls still held their shape But nothing else remained

And then I saw them.

The things I threw away.

[Pre-Chorus - quiet, almost unable to speak] A coat. A letter in my hand. A map I thought I left In someone else’s land. A box. Worn at the corners. Carried far.

Someone kept these things. Someone knew what they were.

[Chorus] This was not abandoned This was a home Someone lived here With what I left behind They carried it whole They kept it close They kept it safe

They kept it.

[Verse 2 - the evidence of violence] Then white cloth on the ground Then red across the stone Too much red for one person Not enough to be gone The hair was bright I knew the color The same as mine The same

I stopped walking I stopped counting I stood in the frame

[Chorus 2 - one word changed, everything changed] This was not abandoned This was a home She lived here With what I left behind She carried it whole She kept it close She kept it safe

She kept it.

[Pre-Chorus 2 - the letter, the priest’s voice] He found it first He handed it without a word

“She knows what I know. And she has been taken.”

That was all.

Then the knife.

[Bridge - the note, cold and final, no music] Pinned to the wall. A hand I did not know. A name I recognized.

“If you want her - Come to the convent. You know where.”

Signed: Pride.

[silence]

I looked at the box. The things I threw away. Carried this far. Kept this long.

[beat]

I looked at my riders.

[beat]

[Final section - her voice alone, then the choir one by one] I ride.

[choir enters]

I RIDE.

[Outro] For the Baker. For the children. For every name we carry.

And for the one Who carried mine.

We ride.
